5 Signs Your Air Ducts Need Cleaning

How to tell when duct cleaning is worth it, and what to expect from a professional cleaning.

Clean Ducts When There Is a Reason To

Air duct cleaning is not something every home needs on a fixed schedule. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says you should consider duct cleaning when there is substantial visible mold growth, when ducts are infested with insects or rodents, or when ducts are clogged with excessive dust and debris. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends cleaning when an inspection shows the system is contaminated. Here are the five signs we see most often in St. Louis and St. Charles homes.

1. Visible Dust and Debris at the Vents

If supply registers puff dust when the system starts, or you can see buildup inside the return grilles and ductwork, the system is carrying debris through the house. Dust that comes back on furniture soon after cleaning is another clue.

2. Recent Renovation or New Construction

Drywall dust, sawdust, and construction debris get pulled into ducts during remodeling and new home builds. This is one of the most common reasons we clean ducts in newer neighborhoods in O'Fallon, Wentzville, and Wildwood.

3. Signs of Pests

Droppings, nesting material, or odors from the vents mean rodents or insects have been in the system. The ducts should be cleaned after the pest problem itself is resolved.

4. Mold You Can See

Visible mold growth inside ducts or on HVAC components should be addressed. The key is moisture control: the moisture source must be fixed, or the mold will return.

5. Musty Odors or Heavy Pet Hair

Persistent musty or stale smells when the HVAC runs, or clumps of pet hair in the returns, often mean the system is holding debris that a filter change will not fix.

What a Professional Cleaning Should Include

A proper duct cleaning cleans the whole system, not just the registers. Our process uses a truck-mounted vacuum to put the ductwork under negative pressure, then brushes and air tools loosen debris so it is pulled out of the home and into the truck. We clean the accessible blower and HVAC components, then restore the vents and registers. Learn more on our air duct cleaning page, or read why we use a truck-mounted vac.

Simple Steps Between Cleanings

  • Change HVAC filters on the schedule your system calls for
  • Keep registers and returns clear of furniture and rugs
  • Seal ducts and registers during remodeling projects
  • Fix leaks and humidity problems quickly
