Our Story Began in 1978
The Mad Hatter Service Company was founded in 1978, born from the self-reliance movement and inspired by August West's chimney sweeping articles in Mother Earth News. What began as a practical response to the energy crisis has grown over 48 years into one of the most technically equipped chimney and ventilation companies in the St. Louis region, still owned and run by the Mack family.

Team Spotlight
Jason “Spidey” Shores, Senior Inspector and Field Mentor
Jason joined The Mad Hatter in the early 2000s and has spent more than two decades mastering how hearth systems have changed across the St. Louis and St. Charles regions. As a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep, his experience spans the traditional hand techniques of years past to the camera and diagnostic tools we use today.
Areas of Expertise
- Internal flue scans: lead operator for complex camera inspections with the Wöhler VIS 350
- Structural integrity: finding hidden breaches in aging masonry and factory-built chimney systems
- Local knowledge: a deep understanding of regional building codes and the historic construction methods found in Missouri homes
Mentoring the Next Class
In 2026, Jason was named Senior Field Mentor for our incoming class of five technical apprentices. He is responsible for turning 22 years of field experience into the standard operating procedures the next generation will follow.
Jason doesn't just look at a chimney; he reads its history. When our new recruits need to understand why a system is failing, they look to Spidey for the mechanical proof.
