Our Story

Founded in 1978, inspired by the self-reliance movement and August West's chimney sweeping articles in Mother Earth News, The Mad Hatter Service Company began as a small family chimney sweep business serving the O'Fallon and St. Charles communities. Over the past 48 years, we've grown into one of the most trusted chimney and air duct cleaning companies in the St. Louis metropolitan area — but we've never lost our family-owned values.

Joe Mack: A Second-Generation Legacy of Safety

For our owner, Joe Mack, The Mad Hatter is more than a career. It is the only work he has ever known. Joe started at age 14, working alongside his father and learning the details of Missouri chimneys and venting systems. What began as a teenager helping his dad grew into a lifelong mission to protect St. Louis families.

Family is the heart of our company. Shortly after graduating high school, Joe married his high school sweetheart, Annie. A true partner in every sense, Annie supported Joe while he earned his Associate's Degree in Heating, Cooling, and Refrigeration, and for more than 30 years she has been the backbone of our operations.

That foundation of hard work and mutual support is how we treat our customers today. When we enter your home, we take your family's safety as seriously as we would our own.

Joe has been part of The Mad Hatter since 1991 and a certified chimney sweep since 2000. He pairs decades of field experience with formal training in heating, cooling, and venting, which is why every Mad Hatter inspection is thorough, documented, and based on St. Louis City & County and St. Charles City & County currently adopted municipal code.

From the historic brickwork of St. Louis to newer homes in St. Charles, Joe knows how Missouri chimneys are built and how they fail. Today he leads a team of CSIA certified technicians and passes on the same values of honesty, precision, and craftsmanship he learned from his father.

For air duct cleaning and commercial dryer and exhaust vent cleaning, we bring our truck-mounted vacuum system. It pulls dust and debris out of the system and straight to the truck outside, so it isn't recirculated through your home or building.
