The Chimney Safety Firm operates as a third-party diagnostic agency. This is a non-biased, data-driven audit required for legal and structural verification.

  • Forensic Video Documentation: A frame-by-frame analysis of the interior venting system to identify micro-fractures, mortar erosion, or improper liner sizing.

  • Structural & Clearance Audit: Precise measurement of the chimney’s relationship to the building’s framing to ensure 100% NFPA 211 and IRC code compliance.

The Chimney Safety Firm was founded to fill a critical gap in the hearth industry: the need for unbiased, forensic-level diagnostics. While the industry is filled with "cleaners," there are very few "specialists" dedicated solely to the science of structural integrity and fire prevention.

The Chimney Safety Firm is owned and operated by Joe Mack, the veteran principal behind the region’s premier chimney service provider, The Mad Hatter Service Company.

After decades in the field, Joe recognized a fundamental conflict of interest in the industry. To solve this, he made a bold move: He split the diagnostic process from the repair process. The Chimney Safety Firm was established as a separate, specialized entity to act as a "Check and Balance." By operating The Chimney Safety Firm as an independent diagnostic firm, we ensure that:

  1. The Evidence is Objective: Our only goal is to find the truth using high-definition video scoping and a 21-point forensic protocol.

  2. The Findings are Unbiased: The Chimney Safety Firm does not perform "sweeps" or "maintenance." The Firm specialists are not looking for "upsells"—they are looking for hazards.

 

Our Relationship with The Mad Hatter

To ensure that any hazards we identify are corrected to our rigorous safety specifications, The Chimney Safety Firm maintains a "Preferred Contractor" agreement with The Mad Hatter Service Company. While our clients are free to use any contractor they choose, we have vetted and certified The Mad Hatter to perform remediation work that meets our forensic standards.

The Forensic Diagnostic Arsenal

The Chimney Safety Firm utilizes a proprietary suite of high-tech forensic instruments to quantify structural health. We do not guess—we measure.

1. Internal Imaging & Structural Scoping

  • Wöhler VIS 350 Chimney Scope: A high-definition, 360-degree pan-and-tilt camera system. We use this to navigate the entire vertical length of the flue, identifying hairline fractures, shifting tiles, and mortar erosion that are invisible to the naked eye.

  • Bosch GLM BLAZE Laser: Precision laser distancing used to calculate exact flue-to-combustible clearances and volume ratios, ensuring your fireplace meets NFPA 211 volumetric standards.

2. Thermodynamic & Combustion Analysis

  • FLIR E5-XT Thermal Imager: An infrared diagnostic tool that detects "hot spots" behind masonry walls. This allows us to see heat transfer through the chimney structure, identifying missing insulation or breached liners before they cause a structure fire.

  • Testo 310 Combustion Analyzer: A digital probe that measures CO (Carbon Monoxide), O2 (Oxygen), and flue gas temperature. This provides a "Blood Pressure" reading for your furnace or fireplace efficiency.

  • Steinel Heat Gun: Used to induce a thermal draft during testing or to verify the reactive properties of fireplace components under controlled heat stress.

3. Pressure & Fluid Dynamics

  • Wöhler DM 602 Manometer: A medical-grade pressure gauge used to measure "Draft" in Pascals (Pa). We use this to determine if your home is "tight" (Negative Pressure) or if the chimney has the physical pull required to exhaust lethal gases safely.

  • Aerosol Smoke Pellets: Used for "Smoke Pressure Testing" to visually track the path of egress and identify leaks in the flue liner or smoke chamber.

4. Material Integrity & Moisture Analytics

  • Elcometer PTG8 Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge: A forensic tool used to measure the exact thickness of steel liners or firebox plates without destructive testing. This identifies "hidden" thinning caused by corrosive creosote.

  • FLIR MR77 Moisture Meter: A pinless psychrometer used to detect water intrusion within masonry or surrounding drywall. This helps us find the "Root Cause" of spalling bricks and mold growth in the St. Louis climate.
